Eastwood

William A. Wilson founded Eastwood in 1913 as one of Houston’s first “master-planned real estate communities.” Eastwood’s innovations incorporated paved streets, cement sidewalks, city water, gas, electricity, telephones, and a sewage system. A contemporary Houston Daily Post article hailed Eastwood as a “model suburb.” Residential deed restrictions outlawed businesses within Eastwood’s boundaries – and that restriction remains in force.

Wilson’s new neighborhood encompassed a park, a community church and the Eastwood School, now Dora P. Lantrip Elementary, the oldest in-use school in the Houston Independent School District.

Part of Houston’s historic East End, Eastwood is bordered to the north by Harrisburg, Sidney Street to the west, Dumble to the east, and I-45 to the south, and enjoys convenient access to Hobby Airport and the Port of Houston. Home owners are only a few miles from Downtown dining and entertainment venues like Minute Maid Park and the Toyota Center, as well as the Texas Medical Center, Gulfgate Center, and the University of Houston Eastwood lays claim to Houston’s largest intact collection of early 20th-century homes reflecting Craftsman, Arts and Crafts, and Mission architecture. Each fall, the neighborhood hosts the Eastwood Historic Homes Tour.

Eastwood is home to young professionals, new families and empty nesters, and they are restoring homes that were the foundation of the neighborhood more than a century ago. Home owners in Eastwood are a part of Houston’s renaissance as Downtown reinvents itself as a destination for living, shopping and entertainment.
